Ten-year outcome of curative "exclusive" chemotherapy in N0M0 squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and pharynx with complete clinical response
Head & Neck Feb 07, 2019
Laccourreye O, et al. - In this retrospective non-randomized analysis, 191 patients were studied by investigators to estimate 10-year outcome following curative "exclusive" chemotherapy in N0M0 squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and pharynx. They recorded 83.3%, 74.4%, and 55.4% and 62.1%, 62.1%, and 55.3% as the 3-, 5-, 10-year overall actuarial survival and local control estimates, respectively. Metachronous second primary cancer and intercurrent disease were the main causes of death. They suggested "exclusive" chemotherapy was useful in 62.3% and harmful in 7.8% of cases. Some may think this treatment isn’t justified by the high rate of local recurrence, but a large number of patients did not need surgery and stayed free of disease.
