Ten-year experience with the anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty at a tertiary care centre
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 26, 2019
Gofton W, et al. - This retrospective review of prospectively gathered data for an observational cohort of all individuals who underwent a THA between 2006 and 2017 was done in order to determine the adverse event rates correlated with the introduction of anterior approach (AA)-THA by a group of experienced surgeons (who operated on 1,087 primary elective hips using AA-THA) at a single tertiary care center and describe experiential factors that might be modified adverse event measures. Adverse events involved intra-operative events, early postoperative periprosthetic fractures, dislocation, implant failure, early infection, and wound complications. Results illustrated that AA-THA could be introduced into practice with an acceptable adverse event rate when contrasted with other strategies to THA. As expected the incidence of adverse events was greater in the early part of the learning curve. Thus, surgeon mentoring in the first twenty cases should be regarded to reduce the risk of adverse events.
