Temporary self-expandable metallic stent placement in post-gastrectomy complications

Oh HJ, et al. - Researchers attempted to determine the efficacy, long-term complications, and outcomes with the use of self-expandable metallic stent in benign disease, particularly post-gastrectomy complications. Between March 2009 and June 2017, data of fifty-seven patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal tract self-expandable metallic stent insertion for post-operative complications were analyzed. Patient demographics, indication for procedure, type of stent used, complications, and patient outcomes were the included collected data. Results of this study suggested that self-expandable metallic stent placement was an effective and safe treatment for post-gastrectomy anastomosis site leakage, stricture, and obstruction, which can reduce the risk of reoperation related mortality and modalities.
