Temporal trends in stroke thrombolysis in the US by race and ethnicity, 2009-2018
JAMA Oct 17, 2021
Suolang D, Chen BJ, Wang NY, et al. - Researchers sought to describe the temporal trend in racial and ethnic disparities in stroke IV thrombolysis use between 2009 and 2018 in a representative sample of US adults.
A total of 935,720 adult hospital discharges with a primary diagnosis of ischemic stroke were identified; 752,369 of these were included in this work (> 97% of excluded observations were due to interhospital transfers, elective admissions, or missing data [5.8% was for race and ethnicity]).
Between 2009 and 2018, there appeared an improvement in racial and ethnic disparities in IV thrombolysis use after stroke.
The gap with White individuals narrowed for Black individuals and disappeared for Hispanic individuals.
Effectiveness of efforts to lower stroke disparities and the increasing organization of stroke care appeared to be the potential reasons for the same.
