Temporal trends in racial differences in 30-day readmission and mortality rates after acute myocardial infarction among Medicare beneficiaries
JAMA Cardiology Feb 28, 2020
Pandey A, Keshvani N, Khera R, et al. - Researchers performed this observational cohort study to analyze temporal trends in 30-day readmission as well as death rates in black and nonblack patients discharged following hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction (MI) at low-performing and high-performing hospitals, as defined by readmission penalty status following Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) implementation. From the National Cardiovascular Data Registry Chest Pain–MI Registry, they extracted data for all patients hospitalized with MI. Over time, a reduction in 30-day readmission rates was evident for both black and nonblack patients with MI. Findings revealed the persistence of disparities in race-specific 30-day readmission rates, these differences seemed to be due to patient-level factors. For nonblack patients, reduced 30-day mortality rates were documented, and black patients continued to have stable 30-day mortality rates. Findings revealed no link between HRRP implementation and improvement or worsening of racial differences in readmission and mortality rates.
