Temporal trends in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes in men and women from 2008 to 2015: A national observational study

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Feb 05, 2020

Hwang SS, Ahn KO, Shin SD, et al. - Via performing a nationwide, population-based observational study recruiting adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) of presumed cardiac origin from 2008 to 2015, researchers investigated how men and women differ in the temporal trends in survival and neurological outcomes after OHCA. The final analysis comprised of 121,900 patients (36.2% women). As per outcomes, men vs women showed a higher degree of improvement in outcomes. Both genders showed improvement in survival during the study; survival improved from 3.2% to 7.9% in men and from 1.8% to 3.7% in women. Men and women had an improvement in neurological recovery from 1.1% to 5.9% and from 0.7% to 2.3%, respectively. Men had significantly increased risk-adjusted survival rates from 3.2% in 2008 to 5.7% in 2015; women did not exhibit increase in these rates to the same degree (from 1.8% in 2008 to 3.4% in 2015; p for trend < 0.01). Women exhibited a lower increase in the risk-adjusted neurological recovery rate.
