Temporal trends and regionalization of acute mastoiditis management in the United States
Otology & Neurotology May 21, 2021
Fujiwara RJT, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional analysis to describe demographics and to examine temporal trends in the inpatient management of acute mastoiditis admissions. They analyzed 26,072 nonelective inpatient admissions with primary diagnosis of acute mastoiditis. A significant proportion of patients with acute mastoiditis present with complications that may necessitate surgical intervention. Inpatient care for acute mastoiditis became increasingly regionalized to teaching hospitals between 2002 and 2014, indicating increased specialization within specific facilities. This trend has the potential to have a significant impact on the cost and subsequent quality of care provided to these patients.
