Temporal improvements noted in life expectancy of patients with colorectal cancer; A Dutch population-based study
Journal of Clinical Epidemiology Apr 11, 2021
Qaderi SM, Andersson TML, Dickman PW, et al. - This population-based study was performed with the aim to determine conditional loss in expectation of life (LEL) due to colorectal cancer (CRC). From the Netherlands Cancer Registry, researchers included all surgically treated patients with CRC with stage I-III between 1990-2016 (N = 203,216). Findings suggest a substantial increase in life expectancy of patients with CRC over calendar years. They indicated clear reductions in conditional loss in expectation of life and most notable improvements in more advanced disease stages. Clinically relevant information provided in this study can be utilized during shared-decision making. The findings yield information on the influence of the combined efforts to improve cancer care and the results can be generalized to other countries with similar healthcare systems.
