Taste and smell impairment in critically ill patients with COVID-19: An intensive care unit study
ENT Journal Dec 04, 2020
Sayın P, Altınay M, Cınar AS, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for determining the rates of taste and smell impairment in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who were hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the ICU were registered in this research between March 2020 and May 2020. Patients were telephoned upon discharge and asked to complete a taste and smell impairment survey. There were 52 patients (mean age, 61.32 ± 12.53 years; mean ICU stay, 10.19 ± 10.24 days) enrolled. Out of 52 patients, 22 (42.3%) experienced taste and/or smell impairment in total. Findings revealed that there were lower rates of taste and/or smell impairment in patients hospitalized in the ICU. During the ICU stay, some patients experienced taste and/or smell impairment.
