Targeted temperature management in cardiac arrest patients with a non-shockable rhythm: A national perspective
American Heart Journal May 07, 2020
Khan MZ, Sulaiman S, Agrawal P, et al. - Researchers investigated trends and outcomes of targeted temperature management (TTM) utilization in cardiac arrest (CA) patients with a non-shockable rhythm from a large nationally representative United States population database. From National Inpatient Sample, they assessed a total of 1,185,479 CA patients in whom cause of arrest was a non-shockable rhythm. A steady increase in TTM utilization was observed over the study period (from January 2006 to December 2013). In propensity-matched groups, patients in whom TTM was utilized exhibited higher mortality vs non-TTM group (72.9% vs. 68.7%). TTM was identified to be an independent predictor of increased mortality in this group. The high mortality with TTM utilization was evident regardless of location of CA.
