Targeted antimicrobial prophylaxis for transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy during active surveillance: Effect on hospitalization
Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations Jan 05, 2018
Cheung C, et al. - The purpose of this trial was to scrutinize the upshot of targeted antibiotic prophylaxis using rectal swab cultures on hospitalization for infectious complications after transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUSP) in patients with prostate cancer. Researchers did not discover any relation between targeted antibiotic prophylaxis with a marked reduction in hospitalization for suspected post-TRUSP biopsy sepsis. Strong correlations were reported between fluoroquinolone resistant organisms (FQ-R) and prostate volume with the risk of hospitalization. These could be included in a risk-adapted approach to prophylaxis. However, a requirement arose for better prophylactic strategies in the case of patients with high risk of subsequent hospitalization.
