Taking the initiative: Risk-reduction strategies and decreased malpractice costs
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Aug 16, 2017
Raper SE, et al. – Researchers carried out a series of Risk Reduction Initiatives (Initiatives) in their Department of Surgery (Surgery) to heighten awareness of attending and resident surgeons regarding strategies for defense against malpractice claims. In this work, they assessed the relative impact of Surgery Initiatives when compared to malpractice experience for the rest of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP). As per findings, educating surgeons on malpractice and risk reduction could play a role in decreasing malpractice costs. Additional extrinsic factors seemed also having an impact on cost data. Emphasis on risk reduction appears to be cumulative and should be part of an ongoing program.
