Systemic lupus erythematosus is associated with poor outcome after acute myocardial infarction
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Oct 27, 2019
Ke SR, Liu CW, Wu YW, et al. - Utilizing the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database, researchers investigated if or not there exists a link between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and poor outcomes following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The SLE group included patients with AMI with a concurrent discharge diagnosis of SLE, and from the total non-SLE group, an age-, gender-, hospital level-, and admission calendar year-matched non-SLE group was selected at a ratio of 1:3. With a diagnosis of AMI, admission of 151 patients with SLE, 113,791 patients without SLE, and 453 matched patients without SLE happened. In the SLE, total non-SLE, and matched non-SLE groups, the in-hospital mortality rates were estimated to be 12.6%, 9.0%, and 4.2%, respectively. In this study, a higher risk of in-hospital mortality as well as a borderline significantly higher risk of prolonged hospitalization after AMI was observed in relation to SLE.
