Systematic review with meta-analysis: The prevalence, risk factors and outcomes of upper gastrointestinal tract Crohn disease
Digestive and Liver Diseases Aug 20, 2021
Chin YH, Ng CH, Lin SY, et al. - The results demonstrate that upper gastrointestinal Crohn's disease (UGI-CD) is present in 13% of patients with Crohn's Disease (CD), and there is an urgent need for surgery in patients with L4-jejunal disease. There is a need for future trials to investigate the effect of ethnicity and region on UGI-CD.
Researchers enrolled 26 articles. In this study, 13% was the prevalence of UGI-CD.
As per the findings, UGI-CD was most commonly found in the stomach (56%) and was correlated with concurrent ileocolonic involvement (54%). They found non-stricturing, non-penetrating UGI-CD as the most common behavioral phenotype (61%).
The data showed that L4-jejunal disease was correlated with the highest rates of surgery.
The location and phenotype of UGI-CD were not significantly influenced by the region of origin.
The findings reveal that young, male patients presenting with erythema nodosum, aphthous ulcers, and stricturing-phenotype are more likely to have UGI-CD, which in turn is linked to the elevated risk of hospitalization and surgery.
