Systematic review with meta-analysis: The prevalence of coeliac disease in patients with osteoporosis
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Aug 29, 2018
Laszkowska M, et al. - Among individuals with osteoporosis, researchers examined the prevalence of coeliac disease (CD) via conducting a systematic review of articles published in PubMed, Medline or EMBASE through May 2017. Eight relevant studies were identified, comprising data from 3188 people with osteoporosis. Findings revealed that about 1 in 62 people with osteoporosis, or 1.6%, have a biopsy-verified CD. In the general population, the heterogeneity was moderate and influenced by the underlying CD prevalence. The results obtained from the study argue against routinely screening patients with osteoporosis for CD, which is contrary to current guideline recommendations.
