Systematic review with meta-analysis: The prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients with irritable bowel syndrome
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Jun 09, 2019
Zamani M, et al. - In irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients, researchers examined systematically the prevalence of anxiety or depression. For this investigation, they assessed studies reporting the prevalence of anxiety/depressive symptoms/disorders in adult (≥15 years) IBS patients. Initially, a total of 14,926 articles were screened; 73 papers were finally included. Data revealed that the prevalence rates of anxiety symptoms and disorders in IBS patients were 39.1% and 23% respectively. Compared with healthy subjects, IBS patients have a three-fold increased odds of either anxiety or depression.
