Systematic review of outcomes after total neoadjuvant therapy for locally advanced rectal cancer
British Journal of Surgery May 19, 2019
Zaborowski A, et al. - Via this systematic review, researchers appraised the current evidence on oncological outcomes in patients with rectal cancer who underwent induction chemotherapy and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgical resection. Among a total of 686 studies identified, they included ten studies involving 648 patients after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. The five-year overall survival rate was 74.4% and the disease-free survival rate was 65.4%. As per outcomes, they recommend considering total neoadjuvant therapy in patients with high-risk locally advanced rectal cancer in order to improve chemotherapy compliance and disease control.
