Systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of weekend admission on outcomes for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms: A call for an equitable seven day vascular service
European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Feb 26, 2021
Leatherby RJ, et al. - For several conditions, there has been an establishment of “the weekend effect” of higher patient mortality when presenting at a weekend compared with a weekday. Researchers herein determined if there is a weekend effect for the emergency condition of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm as well. They conducted a review of the literature in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (PROSPERO registration number CRD42020157484). Searching MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL using the Healthcare Databases Advanced Search interface developed by NICE, they identified 12 observational cohort studies published between 2001 and 2019 as eligible for quantitative synthesis; these studies comprised 14 patient cohorts with a total of 95,856 patients. Findings overall suggest that a correlation exists between weekend admission and higher mortality in patients presenting with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.
