Systematic review and meta-analysis: Development of hepatocellular carcinoma in chronic hepatitis B patients with hepatitis e antigen seroconversion
Journal of Viral Hepatitis Jul 01, 2018
Zhou TC, et al. - Via a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers determined the prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) after hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) seroconversion. They observed that, despite HBeAg seroconversion being related with a reduced risk of HCC, a proportion of patients with CHB could suffer HCC, even after HBeAg seroconversion. Patients with HBeAg seroconversion without cirrhosis had a pooled proportion of HCC development of 0.94%. Moreover, they noted significantly higher risk for HCC development among patients with cirrhosis, active hepatitis, or those over 40 years of age at the time of HBeAg seroconversion. Hence they recommend long-term monitoring for these patients.
