Syphilis coinfection is not associated with an increased risk of virologic failure among HIV-positive men who have sex with men on antiretroviral therapy
Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Mar 18, 2019
Grewal R, et al. - Researchers undertook the OHTN Cohort Study of people receiving HIV care in Ontario to assess the effect of acute syphilis on virologic failure (VF) among virally suppressed HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) taking antiretroviral therapy (ART). Further, they examined if the relationship is confounded by drug use. They analyzed 2632 MSM from 2008 to 2015, on ART identifying VF incidence of 3.5 per 100 person-years. Findings suggest no association of acute syphilis with VF among virologically suppressed MSM on ART. This supports the potential of ART in reducing HIV transmission risk to sexual partners.
