Synergistic effects of perioperative complications on 30-day mortality following hepatopancreatic surgery
Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Jun 22, 2018
Merath K, et al. - Among patients undergoing HP surgery, researchers investigated the interaction effect of postoperative complications on 30-day mortality. Using the ACS-NSQIP Procedure Targeted Participant Use Data File, researchers identified 26,824 patients who underwent HP surgery between 2014 and 2016. of these, 10,886 (40.5%) experienced at least one complication. Observations revealed higher mortality among patients who experienced at least one complication vs patients who did not experience a complication. Both the number and specific type of complication were seemed to impact the incidence of postoperative mortality among patients undergoing HP surgery. They observed additive effect on mortality in association with combinations including transfusion + renal dysfunction, pulmonary dysfunction + renal dysfunction, pulmonary dysfunction + cardiovascular complication, and sepsis/septic shock + renal dysfunction.
