Synchronous periprosthetic joint infections: High mortality, reinfection, and reoperation
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 04, 2021
Gausden EB, Pagnano MW, Perry KI, et al. - Researchers aimed at describing mortality, risk of reinfection, revision, reoperation, and implant survivorship following synchronous periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs). From 1990 to 2018, 34 patients were identified who were treated for PJI in more than one joint within a single 90-day period. A high 30-day mortality rate of 18% was recorded in this largest series to date of patients with synchronous PJIs; one-fourth of these patients underwent unplanned reoperation within the first year. Like liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis correlated with enhanced risk of mortality.
