Symptoms of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis: A prospective cohort study
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Oct 23, 2019
Levy AR, Xing S, Brunelli SM, et al. - Among 165 adults with hyperparathyroidism secondary to kidney failure managed by hemodialysis, researchers investigated if there exist a link between alterations in parathyroid hormone (PTH) and alterations in symptoms in this prospective cohort. They used generalized additive models to evaluate longitudinal links between shifts in PTH levels and symptom severity. The study sample had a mean age of 56 years and 54% were women. In this exploratory study, worsening of bone aches and stiffness, joint aches, muscle soreness, overall pain, itchy skin, and tiredness, were observed in relation to increases in PTH levels over time, and larger fluctuations in PTH levels were associated with more pronounced effects. These outcomes are required to be replicated in other populations before any conclusion is drawn regarding the magnitude and shape of these links.
