Symptoms of depression and insomnia help explain the relationship between stigma and chronic pain severity in people with HIV
The Journal of Pain May 14, 2021
Hobson J, Gilstrap S, Thomas J, et al. - Among 85 people with HIV and chronic pain, it was inquired whether symptoms of depression and insomnia can explain the link between stigma and chronic pain severity, given a negative impact of stigmatization on mood, sleep, and pain outcomes in a previous research. According to findings, depressed mood likely perpetuated by experience of both HIV and chronic pain stigma can result in poor sleep (i.e., insomnia). In turn, chronic pain severity of people with HIV can be exacerbated by depression and insomnia. These data are crucial as appropriate HIV management and retention in care may be hindered by stigma-related worsening of mood, sleep, and chronic pain.
