Symptoms and diagnosis of anxiety and depression in atopic dermatitis in US adults
British Journal of Dermatology Mar 09, 2019
Silverberg JI, et al. - In this cross-sectional, population-based study, 2893 candidates were analyzed to estimate the association between atopic dermatitis (AD), anxiety and depression in the US adults. Authors calculated higher mean Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D) scores along with the greater prevalence of abnormal (≥ 11) HADS-A and HADS-D scores among individuals with AD vs those without AD. Increased mean and abnormal HADS-A and HADS-D scores were found in moderate and severe/very severe self-reported global AD severity, Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM), Patient-Oriented Scoring AD (PO-SCORAD), PO-SCORAD itch and sleep. A higher prevalence of self-reported healthcare-diagnosed anxiety or depression in the past year was noted in adults with AD vs those without AD (40·0% vs 17·5%). Overall, a significant association between AD and increased anxiety and depression was suggested.
