Symptomatic improvement after mesh removal: A prospective longitudinal study of women with urogynecologic mesh complications
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Jun 04, 2021
Pace N, Artsen A, Baranski L, et al. - In this prospective, longitudinal cohort study of women undergoing complete vaginal mesh excision, researchers herein compared patients undergoing the procedure for pain, mesh exposure, or both with respect to their clinical characteristics and outcomes. They assessed a total of 173 women; 48 of these underwent removal for pain, 27 exposure, and 98 exposure plus pain. “Moderate to severe” baseline symptoms were reported in 75% of the patients; the most prevalent and severe symptom was dyspareunia. Women experiencing a pain complication after urogynecologic mesh insertion often do not show improvement in symptoms following mesh removal.
