Swallowing function in survivors of oropharyngeal cancer is associated with advanced T classification
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Apr 02, 2019
Harms A, et al. - To describe the functional status of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) survivors for identification of predictive factors of swallowing dysfunction, researchers assessed 81 candidates at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center between 2005 and 2015. They noted that 67% of subjects had ≥10-pack-year tobacco exposure. They noted that 96% of tumors were p16 positive. They found the necessity of gastrostomy use in 9 cases with 82% of subjects reported a regular diet at last follow-up. They recorded higher gastrostomy use at last follow-up in patients with T3 and T4 tumors vs those with T1 and T2 tumors. They concluded advanced T classification at presentation, a critical predictor of gastrostomy use in long-term OPSCC survivors regardless of p16 status or tobacco exposure history.
