Sustained maternal hyperandrogenism during PCOS pregnancy reduced by metformin in non-obese women carrying a male foetus
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Sep 06, 2020
Andræ F, Abbott D, Stridsklev S, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to characterize androgen patterns in pregnant women (n = 262) with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and healthy control women (n= 119), and to investigate the potential impacts of metformin on maternal androgen levels in PCOS. A post hoc analysis from a randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter study, conducted at 11 secondary care centers and a longitudinal single-center study on healthy pregnant women in Norway. PCOS participants from the first trimester to delivery were randomly assigned to metformin (2g daily) or placebo. In pregnancies with PCOS, metformin had no effect on the maternal androgens. A modest androgen-lowering effect in non-obese PCOS was observed in sub-group analyses. Metformin has shown an androgen-lowering effect in PCOS women carrying a male foetus.
