Suspected gonorrhea and chlamydia: Incidence and utilization of empiric antibiotics in a health system emergency department
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Apr 27, 2019
Garlock J, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed the incidence of positive assay in participants who underwent gonorrhea and/or chlamydia (GC) screening as a primary objective and the proportion of candidates tested that received empiric treatment and the predictive value of risk factors to classify the positive assays as secondary objective. They noted 84 out of 490 assayed patients positive for GC assay. They found the risk factors like male gender, women <25 years of age, accompanying bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or trichomonas, penile discharge, irregular condom use, past/coexisting STDs, and uninsured to predict a positive assay.
