Susceptibility-guided vs empirical treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jun 16, 2021
Gingold-Belfer R, Niv Y, Schmilovitz-Weiss H, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized, controlled studies (RCTs) to ascertain if susceptibility-guided therapy is superior to empirical therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection. RCTs comparing susceptibility-guided vs empirical therapy for H. pylori infection were searched for in PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science through May 25, 2020. The final analysis included 16 studies, with 2,374 patients receiving susceptibility-guided therapy and 2,451 receiving empirical treatment. According to the findings, susceptibility-guided treatment may be slightly superior to empirical first-line triple therapy. Susceptibility-guided therapy does not seem to be more effective than empirical first-line quadruple therapy or empirical rescue therapy.
