Parikh SH, et al. - Among 2,498 infants (median age of 7 months) who undergo allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant, researchers analyzed overall survival trends and other outcomes. They used time-trend analysis in this cohort study to assess 3 periods: 2000 through 2004, 2005 through 2009, and 2010 through 2014. For nonmalignant disease infants, survival rates improved from 2000 through 2004 through 2005 through 2009 and after this time stabilized. Survival has not improved for infants with malignant conditions between 2000 and 2014. Overall, the investigators suggested that survival rates have not improved over the 15-year study period for infants with malignant diseases. In the earlier but not later period of the study, infants with nonmalignant diseases had improved survival rates. Higher relapses remain significant challenges for the malignant cohort and toxicity for all infants. Strategies for reducing recurrence and toxicity and optimizing donor and graft selection may improve future outcomes.
