Survival results in biphasic malignant pleural mesothelioma patients: A multicentric analysis
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Oct 11, 2019
Lococo F, Torricelli F, Lang-Lazdunski L, et al. - A large dataset of biphasic malignant pleural mesothelioma (Biph-MPM) cases was assessed in order to determine their prognostic factors and to assess the role of a multimodal approach, including cancer-directed surgery. Researchers assessed a total of 213 patients with Biph-MPM treated at 4 tertiary centers who experienced MPM; mean age: 68.4 ± 9.5 years; male/female ratio 5:1, respectively. In 58 patients (27.2%), a multimodal treatment including pleurectomy/decortication was performed, while 99 patients (46.5%) received chemotherapy alone, and 56 (26.3%) received best supportive care. Findings suggest that biphasic histology is associated with overall poor prognosis, however, improved long-term results could be achieved with a multimodal approach, including cancer-directed surgery, in very selected patients with Biph-MPM.
