Survival outcomes of locally advanced prostate cancer in patients aged < 50 years after local therapy in the contemporary US population
International Urology and Nephrology Jul 13, 2018
Sheng W, et al. - Researchers compared the impact of local therapy (LT) for locally advanced prostate cancer (LAPC) on survival outcomes in patients aged < 50 years vs in older patients (≥ 50 years). They also evaluated the efficacy of postoperative radiation therapy (PRT) after radical prostatectomy (RP) in patients aged < 50 years. They identified non-metastatic cT3–4 LAPC patients treated with LT (RP, RT or RP+RT) via the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End results database (2004–2014). They performed propensity score matching, followed by evaluation of cancer-specific mortality (CSM), overall survival, and other-cause mortality rates. They also used multivariable competing risk regression model. Findings revealed that relative to the older counterparts, higher CSM was observed in LAPC patients aged < 50 years after LT, specifically after RP. Survival outcomes did not differ significantly in RP vs RP+PRT.
