Survival outcomes and prognostic factors of squamous cell carcinomas arising from sinonasal inverted papillomas: A retrospective analysis of 120 patients

International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Nov 08, 2019

Li Y, Wang C, Wang R, et al. - The data from 120 persons treated at the affiliated Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) originating from sinonasal inverted papillomas (IPs) between 2005 and 2018 were retrospectively analyzed in order to investigate the prognostic factors and survival outcomes of SCC arising from sinonasal IPs, on the basis of the data from a single institution. Among 1,034 persons with sinonasal IPs, 120 with malignancy were recognized. At 5 years, the OS and disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 56.0% and 42.3%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that independent predictive factors for the risk of mortality were synchronous tumors and tumor stage. Another significant independent predictor was the surgical margin, with persons with negative margins showing a more than twice enhanced survival in comparison with those with positive margins. In conclusion, synchronous tumors, advanced tumor stage, and positive surgical margins were the chief factors influencing the prognosis and outcomes. These findings reflect the significance of tumor biology and early discovery in patient outcomes. Moreover, during treatment planning and subsequent tumor surveillance, risk factors should be taken into account.
