Survival outcomes and interval between lymphoscintigraphy and SLNB in cutaneous melanoma- Findings of a large prospective cohort study
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jun 28, 2018
O’Leary FM, et al. - Given the significance of performing sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in cutaneous melanoma (CM) for identifying patient at risk of regional and distant relapse, researchers investigated if timing of lymphoscintigraphy may influence the accuracy of SLNB and patient outcomes. Reviewing prospective data on patients undergoing SLNB for CM at a large university cancer-center between 2008-2015, they identified 1015 patients. As per outcomes, they recommend avoiding delaying SLNB >12 hours after lymphoscintigraphy (LS) using a Tc99(Technetium 99)-labelled nanocolloid because it had significant negative survival impact for patients. Temporal tracer migration seemed to be the underlying cause and advocate. The data appeared to have significant implications for SLNB services.
