Survival in endometrial cancer in relation to minimally invasive surgery or open surgery: A Swedish Gynecologic Cancer Group (SweGCG) study

BMC Cancer Jun 08, 2021

Borgfeldt C, Holmberg E, Marcickiewicz J, et al. - Researchers undertook a population-based retrospective study to determine the impact of surgical procedure, ie, minimally invasive (MIS) or open surgery (laparotomy), on overall survival in endometrial cancer patients’ FIGO stages I-III. From the Swedish Quality Registry for Gynecologic Cancer, 7275 endometrial cancer patients were selected. Univariable and multivariable survival analyses were conducted using Cox proportional hazard models. The identified independent risk factors for overall survival included higher FIGO stage, non-endometrioid histology, non-diploid tumors, lymphovascular space invasion and increasing age. Findings demonstrated that survival for patients with endometrial cancer stages I-III was not impacted by minimal invasive or open surgical approach when recognized prognostic risk factors were incorporated in the multivariable analyses.
