Survival impact of prolonged wait time to liver transplantation in hepatocellular carcinoma: A retrospective analysis of the National Cancer Database
Annals of Epidemiology Aug 31, 2018
Xu K, et al. - Researchers assessed the survival impact of wait-time on patients who had transplantation for stage I and II hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the 2004-2012 Commission on Cancer’s National Cancer Database. Using Kaplan-Meier plots, 5-year mortality was estimated. They observed a tendency to have short wait-time in patients with higher Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, which is consistent with the prioritization strategy for transplantation based on disease severity. The more optimal prognosis in patients with prolonged wait-time, who had more favorable tumor characteristics, could be explained by this. More optimal 5-year survival for stage I and stage II disease was shown by patients with longer wait-time.
