Survival disparities for second primary malignancies diagnosed among childhood cancer survivors: A population-based assessment
Cancer Jul 04, 2019
Brown AL, et al. - Given an increased risk for second primary malignancies (SPMs) after curative therapy in childhood cancer survivors, researchers sought to describe differences between outcomes of SPMs in childhood cancer survivors vs outcomes of first primary malignancies (FPMs). Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program revealed poorer overall survival among childhood cancer survivors (n=1,409) with an SPM vs individuals with FPMs (n=1,332,203) after accounting for cancer type, age, sex, race, and decade of diagnosis. For the most frequent SPMs diagnosed in childhood cancer survivors, disparities in survival were evident.
