Survival differences in women and men after septal myectomy for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

JAMA Mar 05, 2019

Meghji Z, et al. - In this retrospective, single-center study, researchers examined preoperative features and overall survival of women and men undergoing septal myectomy for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This investigation included clinical data from 2,506 adult patients who had septal myectomy from January 1961 to April 2016. According to findings, men and women had significant variances at clinical presentation in this large cohort of surgical patients with obstructive HCM. Women were older and more symptomatic, however there was no difference in survival following septal myectomy by sex after adjustment for important baseline prognostic factors. Identifying the disease early and swift surgical referral of appropriate patients not responding to medical treatment would improved care for women with obstructive HCM.
