Survival benefit of obese patients with pulmonary embolism
Mayo Clinic Proceedings Oct 05, 2019
Keller K, Hobohm L, Münzel T, et al. - A total of 345,831 inpatients, 18 years and older, were included in this analysis from January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2014, in order to examine the influence of obesity and underweight on adverse in-hospital outcomes in pulmonary embolism (PE). Independent of age, gender, comorbidities, and reperfusion therapies, obese individuals had lower mortality than the reference group and a decreased odds ratio for in-hospital mortality. In obesity classes I and II, this survival advantage of obese patients was more proclaimed. A higher prevalence of cancer and higher mortality rates were noted in underweight individuals. In conclusion, in patients with PE, obesity is correlated with reduced in-hospital mortality rates. However obese patients were more frequently treated with reperfusion therapies, the survival advantage of obese patients happened irrespective of age, gender, comorbidities, and reperfusion treatment.
