Survival and prognostic factors in conventional central chondrosarcoma
BMC Cancer Aug 30, 2018
Fromm J, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers focused on the prognostic factors for overall and local recurrence-free survival in a homogenous group of patients with primary central chondrosarcoma (CS) of bone, treated at a single tumor center. They also evaluated their own results on the background of the published data. They found that surgery still was the mainstay of therapy in Chondrosarcoma. The overall survival in this group of patients was remarkably affected by risk factors as grading, metastatic disease, age and location. Local recurrence-free survival was influenced by margin status [R0 (wide resection) vs R1 (marginal resection)] but no impact of margin status (R0 vs R1) was seen on overall survival. A higher risk of local recurrence was observed in cases with chondrosarcomas of the pelvis and these patients deserve a more aggressive treatment.
