Survival and living situation after ruptured abdominal aneurysm repair in octogenarians

Roosendaal LC, Wiersema AM, Yeung KK, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective study of octogenarians treated for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) to determine their 30 day and 1 year mortality and postoperative living situation. In total, they included 157 patients from four centers in the Netherlands. palliative care. Palliative care was provided to 47 patients and surgery was performed in 110 patients. The 1 year mortality rate of 50.0% was observed after endovascular or open repair. The 30 day mortality rate of 40.8% and 31.7% was reported for endovascular and open repair, respectively. Based on overall treatment outcomes, they emphasize not denying octogenarians of surgery based on age alone, as half of the octogenarians undergoing surgical treatment are still alive 1 year after rAAA repair. Furthermore, > 80% got back to their home after rehabilitation.
