Survival and early complications of preterm infants with birthweight less than 500 grams during a 10-year period in Hungary
Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology Feb 25, 2020
Varga P, Berecz B, Magyar Z, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from preterm infants born with less than 500 g in Hungary between 2006 and 2015, to determine the mortality as well as certain early complications in this population. They used data from the database of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office and from the “NICU database", for 486 infants and for 407 infants, respectively. This inquiry was performed into two epochs: 2006-2010 and 2011-2015. They reported survival was 27.1% and 39.1% in the first epoch and in the second epoch, respectively. A slightly higher incidence of early complications was noted in the second epoch. Higher gestational age, birthweight antenatal steroid treatment, surfactant therapy, median Apgar scores, and proportion of caesarean delivery were noted in the surviving group (first and second epoch combined) vs in the non-surviving group (first and second epoch combined). The surviving group had a lower proportion of multiple births. Findings revealed improvement of survival of infants with less than 500 g between 2006-2010 and 2011-2015 in Hungary. A possible link between a slightly higher occurrence of early complications and improved survival was suggested.
