Survival among the older adults with clinical signs of Lewy body dementia in 40 Swedish nursing homes: A 6-year follow-up study
BMJ Open Jun 05, 2019
Zahirovic I, et al. - In this nursing home (NH) population-based study, researchers examined survival among elderly residents of Swedish NHs, with specific focus on those with ≥ 2 signs of Lewy body dementia (LBD). Participants in the study were older adults (aged ≥ 65 years) living in 40 NHs in Malmö. Residents with signs of fluctuating cognition, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, balance problems, or rigidity had significantly higher mortality risk. The main finding of the study was that elderly NH patients with two or more signs of LBD are at significantly higher mortality risk vs other residents of elderly NHs and are, therefore, important to identify. Identifying potential LBD is beneficial for more appropriate medical treatment and nursing care, as well as preventing unnecessary hospital admissions.
