Survey results regarding uptake and impact of synthetic digital mammography with tomosynthesis in the screening setting
Journal of the American College of Radiology Oct 01, 2019
Zuckerman SP, et al. - Through a survey study of 2,600 Society of Breast Imaging members, researchers evaluated use and attitudes about synthesized digital mammography (SM) in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) screening. Of 312 respondents, 96% and 83% reported DBT and SM capability, respectively. Of those without SM, cost or administration and image quality concerns were the most discussed causes. Furthermore, combined SM and DM use in DBT screens and the SM use without DM in the majority of DBT screens, respectively, were reported by 40% and 52%. Reduced dose and enhanced lesion conspicuity were most quoted SM benefits whereas calcification characterization and reduced image quality were the most mentioned SM disadvantages. Most respondents were uncertain whether cancer detection rates modified and recall rates altered with few reporting adverse outcomes. Thus, most utmost radiologists screening with DBT have SM, but only one-half have reconstituted DM with SM. Moreover, irrespective of a few reported adverse screening outcomes with SM–DBT, radiologists have issues regarding image quality, particularly calcification characterization.
