Survey of non-resuscitation fluids administered during septic shock: A multicenter prospective observational study
Annals of Intensive Care Dec 05, 2019
Lindén-Søndersø A, Jungner M, Spångfors M, et al. - This prospective observational study was conducted in eight intensive care units in Sweden and Canada for 4 months in 2018 to quantify and describe non-resuscitation fluid administered to septic shock patients. Adult septic shock patients are recommended for inclusion within 24 h of admission to the intensive care unit. In total, 200 patients were included and the 30-day mortality was 35%. During the observation period, patients received a total of 7,870 (4,060–12,340) ml of non-resuscitation fluids and 2,820 (1,430–4,580) of resuscitation fluids. During the 5-day observation period, vehicles for drugs like vasoactive drugs and antibiotics constituted the largest fraction of non-resuscitation fluids (2400 [1270–4030] ml). Non-resuscitation fluids are the largest fraction of fluids administered in the ICU to septic shock patients and maybe the largest modifiable target for decreasing fluid overload.
