Surveillance and outcomes after curative resection for gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma
Cancer Medicine Mar 12, 2020
Di M Jiang, Suzuki C, Espin-Garcia O, et al. - In this single-site, retrospective cohort analysis of patients who received curative resection for gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma, researchers assessed frequency of successful salvage therapy as well as outcomes in patients who received surveillance. Surveillance testing included those inquiries not triggered by abnormal symptoms, physical examination, or blood tests. Successful salvage therapy included any potentially curative treatment for disease recurrence which afforded postrecurrence disease-free survival ≥ 2 years. Among overall participants who were surveyed, 96% of recurrences were distant, and success of salvage therapy was evident in only 1.9% of patients. Experts also identified that longer OS in patients with surveillance-detected vs symptomatic recurrences was not related to significant earlier disease identification, and may be contributed by variations in disease biology.
