Surgical treatment and prognosis of breast cancer in elderly – A population-based study
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jan 25, 2019
Kaisu O, et al. - Researchers assessed breast cancer patients older than 80 years of age treated at the Breast Surgery Unit of Helsinki University Hospital in 2005–2010 to assess the outcome of treatment, with a particular interest in surgical treatment. They identified 446 patients eligible for inclusion; of these, 401 (90%) received surgery. In this elderly patient population, the surgical treatment seemed safe and surgically treated elderly patients displayed better OS and BCSS vs non-surgical treatment. They observed excellent local and regional disease control, probably due to the high rate of surgical treatment.
