Surgical therapy of thymic tumours with pleural involvement: An ESTS Thymic Working Group Project
European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Aug 24, 2017
Moser B, et al. – Authors sought to determine the value of surgical therapy for primary or recurrent thymic epithelial tumours (TETs) with pleural involvement. For TETs with pleural involvement, complete resection remains the mainstay of treatment. Study populations treated with extrapleural pneumonectomies (EPPs), total pleurectomies (TPs) and local pleurectomies (LPs) were similar regarding survival. Results suggested EPP, TP and LP as equally effective procedures. Procedural choice depends upon the extent of tumour distribution. For local control of disease, EPPs, TPs and LPs appeared efficient procedures when performed within a multimodality setting, as they yielded excellent results regarding overall (OS), cause–specific (CSS), disease–free (DFS) and freedom from recurrence (FFR).
