Surgical risk and benefits of laparoscopic surgery for elderly patients with gastric cancer: A multicenter prospective cohort study
Gastric Cancer Dec 16, 2018
Honda M, et al. - Researchers involved 6090 non-elderly and 2837 elderly (age ≥ 75 years) participants from 2014 to 2015, from 169 institutions, identified by stratified random sampling, to evaluate the clinical profits in elderly cases. In this prospective cohort study, they compared the surgical results of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) to those of open gastrectomy (OG) in non-elderly and elderly subjects and obtained the incidence of severe morbidities (Grade ≥ 3) as the primary consequence. They confirmed the association of OG with a significantly longer median length of postoperative stay in comparison to LG. LG was not observed as an independent risk factor but had shortened the length of postoperative hospital stay.
